This work was created, literally, in a day. Sasaki drew the red waves during the daytime and erased them partially at night. He has drawn the red waves by imaging an entire day on one canvas and erased part of the waves forgotten memory of that day.

As time passes by, there are days or moments that we completely forget, as if they didn’t exist. The parts that he erases, he does so in a few seconds in several different ways. He uses several different ways because our memories also disappear in different ways.

Sasaki has done these heartbeat drawings since 1995. Over the past 15 years, he has not only listened to his own heartbeat, but he has also listened to more the 2,500 people’s heartbeats and has drawn them on canvases.

He says that “heartbeats are the beginning of everything. They contain the energy to live.” His performance reminds us to feel the here and now; right now, we are alive. Now is an actual moment. And this book is evidence that there was an actual moment.
